This resource book for the 1977 National Conference on Pretrial Release and Diversion describes the work of the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies, summarizes the content of the conference workshops, and presents background papers on the work of pretrial agencies and on the communities served by these agencies.
Abstract
Workshops covered the traditional and changing roles of the bail bondsman, practical issues relating to detention and possible release of dangerous defendants, neighborhood dispute resolution, and community-based organizations as third party custody groups. Other sessions focused on the diversion of high risk cases, recent developments in juvenile diversion, and legislation in the area of pretrial release and diversion. Resource documents focus on the planning and administration of pretrial programs, problems and crises faced by pretrial agencies, and evaluations of pretrial programs. Commentaries are also included by a prosecutor, a judge, and a district attorney. Several court decisions relating to the rights of the accused and other issues affecting defendants in the pretrial process are also discussed. Figures and tables are included for some papers.
