This article examines the goals and operations of the International Corrections and Prisons Association for the Advancement of Professional Corrections.
Abstract
Recognizing the common problems of many national prisons services, the International Corrections and Prisons Association for the Advancement of Professional Corrections (ICPA) is devoted to improving global understanding and professionalism in the corrections sector. There are growing numbers of effective and far less costly alternatives to incarceration, but corrections professionals regard them as alternatives of second choice and have been unable or unwilling to establish their legitimacy and acceptance on a sufficiently broad basis. The objectives of the ICPA include: (1) promoting cooperation among individuals and organizations interested in corrections and criminal justice policies that affect corrections and prisons; (2) encouraging involvement of victims, offenders' families, volunteer organizations, and other elements of the community in finding workable solutions to corrections and criminal justice issues; (3) enhancing public education, understanding, and involvement in corrections matters; and (4) supporting or collaborating with and facilitating the work of bilateral and multilateral agencies providing technical assistance or training.
