A total of 1,073,988 motor vehicle thefts occurred in 1981, a decrease of 3.6 percent from the previous year and the first decline in 4 years. Throughout the Nation, a vehicle theft occurred every 29 seconds.
Abstract
The report presents tabular data on motor vehicle theft trends from 1972-81. It records the value of property stolen in motor vehicle-related theft, motor vehicle thefts by State, thefts in cities, and theft ring cases. It explains the computer operations of the National Automobile Theft Bureau (NATB) as well as NATB activities related to salvage, fraud, training, and chop shops, along with State antivehicle theft activities. Photographs are included.
