THIS BOOK IS CONCERNED WITH MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS AS APPLIED TO THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE FIELD TO ASSIST STUDENTS IN THE USE OF COMPUTERS FOR MULTIVARIATE DATA ANALYSIS AND IN ADVANCED STUDY OF THE SUBJECT.
Abstract
ALTHOUGH THE MAJOR PORTION OF THE BOOK DEALS WITH CLASSIC TECHNIQUES OF MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS, SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE DISRUPTIVE ROLE OF MEASUREMENT ERRORS. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION IS PRESENTED FOR PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS ANALYSIS, FACTOR ANALYSIS, HIERARCHICAL CORRELATION MATRICES, NAMING FACTORS, AND THE LOW RANK OF CORRELATION MATRICES. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ON MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS IN BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH CONCERN THE ESTIMATION OF VARIANCES AND COVARIANCES, LINEAR CONSTRAINTS ON VARIATES, MATRICES OF REDUCED RANK, TERMINOLOGY, THE METRIC SYSTEM, AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF VARIATES. A DISCUSSION ON MATRICES AND DETERMINANTS COVERS MATRICES AND THEIR MANIPULATION, INVERSE MATRICES, LATENT ROOTS AND VECTORS OF A MATRIX, ORTHOGONAL MATRICES, MATRIX ROTATION, QUADRATIC FORMS OF MATRICES AND THEIR DIFFERENTIATION, THE LAGRANGE MULTIPLIER, AND LATENT ROOTS AND VECTORS OF NONSYMMETRIC MATRICES. THE REMAINING CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK FOCUS ON PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS ANALYSIS, FACTOR ANALYSIS, CONFIRMATORY FACTOR ANALYSIS, MULTIPLE LINEAR REGRESSION, CANONICAL CORRELATIONS, DISCRIMINANT FUNCTION AND CANONICAL VARIATE ANALYSIS, CONTINGENCY TABLE ANALYSIS, ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE IN MATRIX NOTATION, MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE, AND CLUSTER ANALYSIS AND MISCELLANEOUS TECHNIQUES. DATA, MATHEMATICAL FORMULATIONS OF THE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES, REFERENCES, AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED.
