Designed for use by police officers, parole and probation officers, the military, firefighters, trainers, child welfare workers, and others, this manual presents translations in six languages (Spanish, Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese) of phrases commonly used in police-citizen interactions in both routine and life- threatening situations.
Abstract
The manual is intended to promote realistic, effective communication while enhancing the user's safety in interactions with non-native speakers such as people in business, foreign visitors immigrants with language difficulties, emergency service agency agencies, and others. The manual basic language tips for each language, common greetings, the name structure, common vocabulary, and words and phrases for common situations a police officer or other public safety professional might encounter. Topics include accidents, advice of rights and consent to search, domestic assault, contraband, bookings, bail, fire and arson, gangs, immigration and customs, medical and natural disasters, theft, traffic stops, and weapons. The manual also offers general guidelines for effective communications and recall under stress.
