THE POTENTIAL OF THE MINOLTA MONTAGE SYNTHESIZER AS AN AID TO SUSPECT IMAGE GENERATION IS ASSESSED. SEVERAL DEVELOPMENTAL EFFORTS TO MODIFY AND IMPROVE THE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THIS WORK IS PART OF A FACIAL IMAGE RECREATION PROJECT. THE MINOLTA SYSTEM PRODUCES PICTURE-LIKE IMAGES BY BLENDING FEATURES FROM DIFFERENT PHOTOGRAPHS. TO DATE IT HAS HAD LIMITED UTILITY IN SUSPECT IDENTIFICATION BECAUSE OF SEVERAL SHORTCOMINGS: THE BASIC SYSTEM ALLOWED ONLY THREE SUBSTITUTIONS FOR EACH FEATURE, THE FIT OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS WAS IMPERFECT, AND IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO BLOCK OUT ONE AREA OF THE FACE WITHOUT BLOCKING OUT THE ENTIRE FACE. A DESCRIPTION IS PROVIDED OF THE HARDWARE MODIFICATIONS MADE TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF POSSIBLE SUBSTITUTIONS TO SIX PER FEATURE, TO IMPROVE THE FILTER SYSTEM AND THE FIT OF THE FEATURES INTO THE TOTAL FACE, AND TO ALLOW MORE ACCURATE ADJUSTMENT OF THE IMAGE RECREATION. WORK WAS ALSO BEGUN ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SOFTWARE SYSTEM FOR THE SYNTHESIZER. (THE ORIGINAL MONTAGE SOFTWARE IS FOR JAPANESE FACES). HARDWARE DEVELOPMENTS ARE ILLUSTRATED, AND THE TYPES OF FEATURES CHOSEN FOR THE PRELIMINARY SOFTWARE PHASE OF THE DESIGN ARE PROVIDED. PHOTOGRAPHS COMPARE TARGET SUBJECTS AND RECONSTRUCTIONS GENERATED BY THE MINOLTA SYNTHESIZER. SCHEMATIC DRAWINGS EXPLAIN HARDWARE OPERATIONS. TABLES PRESENT SOFTWARE DESIGN DATA, INCLUDING FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS OF FACIAL MEASUREMENTS, THE CLASSIFICATION SCHEMES USED FOR FEATURES, AND A DESCRIPTION OF FEATURE CLASSIFICATIONS USED TO CONSTRUCT TARGET COMPOSITES. NUMEROUS PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRAWINGS ARE PROVIDED. FOR RELATED DOCUMENTS, SEE NCJ 47585-47586 AND 47588-47592. (GLR)
