STUDY FOCUSING ON THE ARREST PROCESS, WITH AN EXAMINATION OF THE BEHAVIORAL ATTITUDES OF 24 ADULT MALES WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, POLICE DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
THE STUDY EXPLORED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE OFFICERS' ARREST RECORDS, AGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND THEIR DEGREE OF TOLERANCE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD THE USE OF AUTHORITY AND OPPORTUNITY FOR PROMOTION. THEIR ACTUAL ARREST RECORDS WERE COMPARED WITH THEIR RESPONSES TO QUESTIONNAIRES REFLECTING THEIR EDUCATION, LENGTH OF SERVICE, AGE, TOLERANCE, AND USE OF AUTHORITY. ALSO THESE DATA WERE COMPARED WITH RESPONSES TO ANOTHER QUESTIONNAIRE REFLECTING OPINIONS OF THE IMMEDIATE SUPERVISORS OF THE 24 POLICEMEN WITH RESPECT TO HOW THEY (THE SUPERVISORS) THOUGHT THE OFFICERS WOULD ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. FOLLOWING A STATISTICAL EXAMINATION OF THE DATA, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT YOUNGER OFFICERS OF THE COSTA MESA POLICE DEPARTMENT WITH HIGHER EDUCATION LEVELS MAKE MORE ARRESTS THAN OFFICERS WHO ARE OLDER AND HAVE LESS EDUCATION. IT APPEARS THAT THE POLICEMAN OPERATES MORE EFFICIENTLY WITH REGARD TO NUMBER OF ARRESTS WITH SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED IN THE PROCESS OF EDUCATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
