This study identified the needs and special circumstances of older persons (over 55 years old) being supervised by the Kansas City Office of Probation (Missouri) and offered recommendations for better serving and supervising them.
Abstract
Conducted during the fall of 1986, the study interviewed a random sample of 62 older probationers about their education and work background; living conditions; friend and family networks; experiences with the legal system; and financial, physical, and emotional circumstances. The older probationers were not persistent offenders, but rather had physical and financial problems that apparently undermined their ability to maintain a law abiding lifestyle. Subjects tended to need services and supervision rather than rehabilitation. Their social networks were weak. Recommendations focus on traffic offenders, housing code violators, alcohol offenders, law enforcement and court handling of older offenders, probation case management, and the informational needs of older offenders. 16 tables, questionnaire, and 11 references.
