Abstract
THE AUTHOR BEGINS BY REVIEWING RELEVANT LITERATURE ON MOONSHINING AND THEN EXPLAINS THE THEORETICAL ORIENTATION AND METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MOONSHINING IS GIVEN AND THE PROCESS OF BECOMING SOCIALIZED INTO THE ROLE OF A MOONSHINER IS DELINEATED. THE SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS AMONG PEOPLE ENGAGED IN THE ILLICIT PRODUCTION OF WHISKEY ARE EXAMINED ALONG WITH THE ATTITUDES AND PERCEPTIONS OF THOSE WITHIN AND WITHOUT THE MOONSHINING STRUCTURE.
