PRACTICAL TIPS ARE GIVEN FOR THE POLICE OFFICER WHO IS LOOKING FOR A SECOND JOB TO AUGMENT HIS INCOME, SUPPORT HIS FAMILY DURING LAYOFFS, AND PROVIDE A RETIREMENT INCOME OR A NEW CAREER IN CASE OF DISABILITY.
Abstract
THE BEST SECOND JOB FOR A POLICE OFFICER IS SUMMARIZED AS ONE WHICH: (1) OFFERS IMMEDIATE INCOME, (2) CAN BE INCREASED IN CASE OF A LAYOFF, (3) OFFERS A FUTURE, (4) CAN BE A SECOND CAREER IN CASE OF EARLY RETIREMENT OR DISABILITY, AND (5) HAS THE APPROVAL OF THE SUPERINTENDENT. SINCE POLICE OFFICERS ARE TRAINED IN BOTH SERVICE AND COMMUNICATIONS, JOBS IN THESE AREAS TIE INTO PRESENT SKILLS AND INCREASE POLICE SKILLS. SERVICE JOBS ARE INCREASING AT TWICE THE RATE OF MANUFACTURING JOBS, AND THEY OFFER A FUTURE. ALSO, JOBS IN EXPANDING FIELDS SUCH AS HEALTH CARE, TRANSPORTATION, PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE, DATA PROCESSING AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS, AND ENERGY RESOURCES OFFER GOOD FUTURE POTENTIAL. THE OFFICER IS CAUTIONED TO KNOW IN ADVANCE HOW MANY HOURS CAN BE GIVEN TO A SECOND JOB AND TO AVOID LETTING THE JOB INTERFERE WITH POLICE WORK. TEMPORARY HELP AGENCIES ARE RECOMMENDED AS A SOURCE OF FLEXIBLE PART-TIME WORK. CRAFTS AND HOBBIES ARE CLUES TO TALENTS WHICH CAN BE EXPANDED INTO PART-TIME BUSINESSES OR RELATED JOBS. THE OFFICER IS ENCOURAGED TO LOOK TO BASIC SKILLS AND INTERESTS, BE WILLING TO GET ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, AND DEVELOP A GOOD SECOND JOB. (GLR)
