Monthly statistics for the inmate population served by Florida's Department of Corrections indicate that the number of inmates increased from 49,298 in April 1993 to 49,733 in May 1993 (less than 1 percent) and that the inmate population increased by 2,209 between May 1992 and May 1993 (4.6 percent).
Abstract
Admissions in May 1993 totaled 2,351, down by 5.5 percent from April 1993, and were 12.3 percent less than that forecasted by the Criminal Justice Estimating Conference (CJEC). Admissions were down 15.7 percent between May 1992 and May 1993. Under the prior CJEC forecast, the 14,347 actual admissions from November 1992 through April 1993 fell below the 17,470 forecasted for the period by 17.9 percent. Inmate releases totaled 2,157 in May 1993, down by 9.4 percent from April 1993. The 1,611 Control Release Authority releases constituted 60 percent of all releases in May 1993. During May 1993, there were five escapes from major institutions and 13 escapes from community facilities. The average monthly escape figure of 17.5 for fiscal year 1992- 1993 was slightly below the average of 17.6 for fiscal year 1991-1992. In fiscal year 1992-1993, the average monthly escape rate per 1,000 inmates was 0.12 in major institutions, 2.88 in community facilities, and 0.36 systemwide. There were 29 recaptures in May 1993.
