Florida's Department of Corrections is implementing a statewide system of substance abuse programs to identify and provide treatment to inmates who have a history of substance abuse problems and/or drug-related crime, and this manual explains the system's design and structure.
Abstract
The statewide system of services consists of five parts: (1) assessment to determine the severity of inmate substance abuse; (2) 35-40 hour substance abuse education program; (3) 8-week treatment program designed as a modified therapeutic community; (4) full-term therapeutic community treatment experience averaging about 1 year in length; and (5) structured 10-week outpatient drug treatment program for inmates assigned to community correctional centers. Inmates identified at reception centers as having a substance abuse problem will be assigned to the appropriate level or tier of service. The system manual covers substance abuse program goals, inmate admission and discharge criteria, inmate treatment objectives and phases, confidentiality issues, and institutional issues.
