This chapter locates the regional focus of developments in Italy in the context of the dominant prevailing models of crime prevention within Europe.

Abstract

This chapter highlights the influence that French and British models of crime prevention exerted on Italian developments, producing a mixed model. Drawing on Italian research findings into the implementation of crime prevention strategies, a mutation in traditional social crime prevention was determined. It outlines a shift away from the focus of social prevention on addressing structural factors that might influence offender motivation and towards quality of life and environmental concerns, victim protection, and public reassurance, as well as social prevention which increasingly serves as an auxiliary to situation crime prevention. Also highlighted is the emerging alliance between situational and developmental approaches. The chapter concludes by noting that the Italian experience reflects a wider theme of convergence across Europe with regard to crime prevention policies. Figure, notes, and references
