SECURITY MEASURES AIMED AT DETERRING INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE ARE DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE SECURITY PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT, AND AN AWARENESS OF SOURCES OF RISK, ESPIONAGE TECHNIQUES, AND PREVENTIVE ACTIONS.
Abstract
COMPREHENSIVE AND DYNAMIC MODERN INDUSTRIAL SECURITY PRIMARILY REQUIRES COMPETENT AND TRUSTWORTHY PERSONNEL. THESE INCLUDE THOROUGHLY TRAINED BUILDING GUARDS, A CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER WHO IS NOT OVERLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF ESPIONAGE AND WHO CAN WORK COOPERATIVELY WITH ALL DEPARTMENTS AND PERSONNEL IMPLEMENTING SECURITY POLICIES, AND FINALLY EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE BEEN THOROUGHLY SCREENED AND WHOSE LOYALTY IS ASSURED. AN INDUSTRIAL SPY CAN BE ANYONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE COMPANY EVEN TANGENTIALLY. SPIES ARE INTERESTED IN A WIDE VARIETY OF DATA: ESPECIALLY INDUSTRIAL, COMMERCIAL, AND SCIENTIFIC POTENTIALS AT ALL LEVELS WITHIN THE COMPANY. A NUMBER OF PRACTICES CAN HELP PREVENT SECURITY RISKS AND DETER THE INDUSTRIAL SPY: RESTRICTING ACCESS BY PARTITIONING DEPARTMENTS AND REQUIRING SECURITY BADGES, RESTRICTING ACCESS TO PHOTOCOPYING MACHINES, DESTROYING OLD INFORMATION AND INCINERATING EACH DAY'S TRASH, ARRANGING OFFICES TO DISCOURAGE COLLUSION, FACILITATING EMPLOYEE JOB SATISFACTION, NUMBERING ALL DOCUMENT COPIES AND PROVIDING PROTECTIVE STORAGE FOR ALL DOCUMENTS, USING ONLY THE BEST FIRE AND BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEMS AND RELIABLE CLOSED CIRCUIT AND VIDEOTAPE SYSTEMS, AND UTILIZING A PYRAMID SYSTEM OF LOCKS AND KEYS. TWENTY TWO WAYS IN WHICH A RIVAL MAY ENGAGE IN INDUSTRIAL SPYING ARE PRESENTED AND INCLUDE SUCH TECHNIQUES AS INFILTRATION, KIDNAPPING, BLACKMAIL, WIRETAPPING, MONITORING OF COMPANY OR EMPLOYEE ACTIVITIES, AND FINANCIAL MANIPULATION.
