This British manual explains how retail managers can construct and implement proven cost-effective loss prevention systems specifically designed to reduce loss, increase profits, and give peace of mind to the retailer. It covers facility design and personnel training for security against armed holdups, thefts, bomb threats, shoplifting, and fraud.
Abstract
The text details the roles of top management, the internal auditor, and retail staff in security and loss prevention. Security recommendations for new buildings are suggested, and alarm systems are described along with other loss prevention and deterrent equipment. Ways to select, screen, and train the retail employee are discussed. The manual describes the duties and operations of the store detective, check and credit card fraud prevention, and an electronic antishoplifting system. Ways to handle refunds, one of the worst areas for fraud and theft, are reviewed. The manual describes 'test purchasing,' or undercover purchases done by trained operatives to detect inefficient business operations or internal theft. Personnel duties in the event of a fire, bomb threat, a power failure, or other emergency are reviewed, and an emergency preparedness program is designed. Security checklists, case studies, and an index are appended. Photographs and charts are supplied.
