POTENTIAL APPLICATONS OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY IN CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS (SIMULATION, SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, AND OPERATIONS RESEARCH) ARE ADDRESSED, AND A PROPOSED INMATE INFORMATION SYSTEM IS DETAILED.
Abstract
A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE NOTES COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SUCH AREAS AS PERSONALITY DIAGNOSIS, PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, MANAGEMENT TO WORLDWIDE ORGANIZATIONS, PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST ADMINISTRATION AND INTRPRETATION, ABERRANT BEHAVIOR PREDICTION, EDUCATIONAL AND DRUG COUNSELING, SIMULATED AND ACTUAL BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND COGNITIVE MODELS, AND INFORMATION STORAGE. COMPUTERS BENEFICIALLY AFFECT BUSINESS AFFAIRS OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS BY MAINTAINING ACCURATE ACCOUNTING INFORMATION. THEY FACILITATE ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS OF PLANNING, STAFFING, ORGANIZING, AND CONTROLLING. TWO NETWORK ANALYTIC MODELS USED TO PLAN, CONTROL, AND SCHEDULE PROJECTS ARE THE PROGRAM EVALUATION AND REVIEW TECHNIQUE AND THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD. A PROPOSED INMATE INFORMATION SYSTEM, WITH CAREFULLY OUTLINED STEPS FOR IMPLEMENTATION, WOULD ENCOMPASS A BROAD ARRAY OF DATA ON EACH INMATE WHICH COULD BE CAPTURED AND STORED FOR INSTANT RETRIEVAL. A FLOW CHART IS INCLUDED, AND SAMPLE INPUT CARDS ARE APPENDED. REFERENCES ARE LISTED. (DEP)
