IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE PERSONALITY OF XYY AND XXY MALES THIS STUDY APPLIES THE MINNESOTA MULTIPHASIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY (MMPI) TO A SAMPLE OF 9 KLINEFELTER (47 XXY) AND 7 XYY MALES.
Abstract
THE GROUP OF KLINEFELTER MALES RANGED IN AGE FROM 16 TO 49 AND HAD INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENTS (IG'S) OF 68 TO 93. THEY WERE LOCATED AT A HOSPITAL FOR THE CRIMINALLY INSANE, A YOUTH DETENTION CENTER, A STATE AND A PRIVATE MENTAL INSTITUTION, AND MAXIMUM SECURITY STATE PENAL INSTITUTIONS. THE XYY MALES RANGED IN AGE FROM 19 TO 38 YEARS AND HAD IQ'S BETWEEN 82 AND 103. THESE SUBJECTS WERE INCARCERATED AT A MAXIMUM SECURITY STATE HOSPITAL FOR THE CRIMINALLY INSANE, A YOUTH DETENTION CENTER, A MAXIMUM SECURITY CITY PRISON AND A STATE PRISON. ALL 16 SUBJECTS AND A CONTROL SAMPLE OF 50 PATIENTS IN A HOSPITAL FOR THE CRIMINALLY INSANE WERE ADMINISTERED THE MMPI AND THEIR SCORES WERE COMBINED INTO MEDIAN 'T' PROFILES FOR EACH GROUP AND COMPARED. THE MOST STRIKING FINDING WAS THE ELEVATION ON TWO PATHOLOGICAL SCALES (PSYCHOPATHIC DEVIATE AND SCHIZOPHRENIA) OCCURING IN BOTH THE XYY AND THE KLINEFELTER MALES. PROFILES FROM BOTH CHROMOSOMALLY ABNORMAL GROUPS WERE ALSO SIMILAR IN SHAPE TO THE CONTROL GROUP, BUT XXY MALES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER (MORE PATHOLOGICAL) ON 'SCHIZOPRENIA' AND 'HYPOMANIA' SCALES. THERE WAS TOO MUCH VARIABILITY AMONG INDIVIDUAL RECORDS TO SUGGEST THAT MMPI HAS DIAGNOSTIC UTILITY FOR EITHER SYNDROME. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT FURTHER STUDIES OF XYY AND KLINEFELTER MALE MMPI PROFILES BE DONE WITH PROFILES OF OTHER TYPES OF CONTROL GROUPS. TABULAR DATA AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (DAG)
