THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT A COLLEGE DEGREE IN SOME AREAS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO SERVE AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROPER FIELD TRAINING FOR POLICE RECRUITS.
Abstract
BUT MANY NEW COLLEGE-EDUCATED RECRUITS ARE EXPECTED BY THEIR SUPERIORS TO BETTER PERFORM THE FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS OF DAILY POLICE ACTIVITIES THAN THEIR NON-COLLEGE COUNTERPARTS. SUPERVISORS MAY CONSEQUENTLY BE MUCH MORE CRITICAL OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE FORMER, AND MAY REACH THE ERRONEOUS CONCLUSION THAT COLLEGE EDUCATED RECRUITS ARE LIKELY TO MAKE LESS CAPABLE POLICE OFFICERS.
