Abstract
THE HISTORY OF THE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES, SUCH AS IMPROVING INMATE-STAFF RELATIONS, AND REORGANIZATION OF PRISON REVIEW PROCEDURES ARE LISTED. SPECIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE THE PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION CREATING THE OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSMAN AS AN INDEPENDENT GOVERNMENT AGENCY, NEGOTIATING THE RELEASE OF A HOSTAGE, AND CLARIFICATION OF DISCIPLINARY POLICIES. COMPLAINT PROCEDURES AND KINDS OF COMPLAINTS RECEIVED ARE DISCUSSED. TABLES SHOWING COMPLAINTS, TIME LAG IN HANDLING COMPLAINTS, COMPLAINT SOURCES, AND DEGREE OF SATISFACTION WITH COMPLAINT RESOLUTION ARE GIVEN. APPENDIXES INCLUDE THE OMBUDSMAN FOR CORRECTIONS BILL AND AN EXECUTIVE ORDER CONCERNING THE OMBUDSMAN COMMISSION.
