These crime statistics for Minnesota reflect offense, arrest, and urban-rural and regional data for 1988.
Abstract
The crime index (serious crimes) totaled 187,000 offenses during 1988, a 5.6-percent decrease from 198,084 offenses recorded in 1987. The crime rate represented 4,404 per 100,000 population in 1988. Of total crime index offenses reported in 1988, 22 percent were cleared by arrest or exceptionally cleared. Larceny was the largest category of serious crime reported. Violent crime accounted for 7 percent of all crime index offenses reported in 1988. There were 12,487 murders, forcible rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults. Compared with 12,150 total violent crimes for 1987, the 1988 figures represented a 2.8-percent increase in violent crime for the State. Offenses involving murder decreased by 11.8 percent between 1987 and 1988. The number of rapes and robberies decreased, but aggravated assaults increased. Property crime amounted to 93 percent of crime index offenses for 1988. There were a total of 174,513 burglaries, larcenies, motor vehicle thefts, and arsons. Compared with 185,934 offenses reported in 1987, the 1988 figures represented a 6-percent decrease in property crime for the State. Burglaries, theft/larceny, and arson decreased, while motor vehicle theft increased. Law enforcement agencies made 175,271 arrests in 1988 compared with 162,584 arrests in 1987. Adult and juvenile arrests totaled 131,505 and 43,766 respectively. Data on urban-rural and regional offenses and arrests for 1988 are presented. Information is also given on Minnesota law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, missing children, narcotics offenses, and activities of Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. 33 tables and 33 figures
