THIS 1978 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE CONTAINS ITS ORGANIZATION CHART AND FINANCIAL STATEMENT, AS WELL AS DESCRIPTIONS AND STATISTICS ON JAIL OPERATIONS, POLICE SERVICES, AND TRAINING PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE DEPARTMENT CREATED AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE IN 1978 AND SENT EMPLOYEES TO RELATED TRAINING PROGRAMS, COMPLETED DEPARTMENTAL REORGANIZATION, AND FOCUSED SPECIAL ATTENTION ON EFFORTS TO CONTROL CRIME IN THE PARKS. LABOR PROBLEMS DELAYED THE JAIL'S REMODELING PROGRAM, ALTHOUGH A NEW VISITING AREA WAS FINISHED; EXERCISE AREAS, MAXIMUM SECURITY CELLS, AND A NEW KITCHEN ARE SCHEDULED FOR 1979 COMPLETION. OTHER 1978 HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED THE COUNTY'S APPROVAL OF FUNDS FOR A FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEM, PLANS TO COMPUTERIZE RECORDS, AND RECLASSIFICATION OF JURISDICTIONS OF THE CIRCUIT COURTS. FUTURE PLANS FOR THE DEPARTMENT INCLUDE THE FORMATION OF A SECURITY BUREAU AND A DRUG UNIT, CONSTRUCTION OF OFFICE AND TRAINING FACILITIES, AND INCREASED USE OF COMPUTERS. THE REPORT CONTAINS NUMEROUS PHOTOGRAPHS AND TABLES, DUTIES AND OPERATING STATISTICS OF VARIOUS UNITS WITHIN THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, A CODE OF ETHICS, AND AN INDEX. (MJM)
