The Michigan State Police in 2001 continued its longstanding annual program of testing police vehicles with the testing of carryover models as well as new police and special service vehicles for 2002.
Abstract
The testing used a variety of police package vehicles capable of pursuits, as well as special-service package patrol vehicles not capable of pursuit. The tests included acceleration to 100 miles per hour, absolute top speed, braking from 60 miles per hour, road-racing lap times, ergonomic and communications installations analysis, and EPA rule economy ratings. The acceleration, top speed, and braking tests took place at DaimlerChrysler’s Chelsea Proving Ground. The vehicle dynamics testing took place on the 2-mile road course at Grattan Raceway. The Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Tahoe in two-wheel and four-wheel drive, the AM General Hummer, Chevrolet Camaro automatic, Ford Explorer, Ford Expedition, and Ford Excursion were mostly carryover models from the previous year. New police and special-service vehicles for 2002 included the Dodge Intrepid, Dodge Durango in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive, and a long wheelbase version of the Ford Crown Victoria. The complete test report with the detail of the test protocol, the individual results, and a bid adjustment methodology is available at www.justnet.org under the title National Evaluation Program for Police Patrol Vehicles.
