SURVEYS OF MICHIGAN HOUSEHOLDS AND EMPLOYERS WERE CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE CITIZEN ATTITUDES TOWARD AND OPINIONS OF CRIME AT PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT IN 1978.
Abstract
A PROBABILITY SAMPLE OF 800 MICHIGAN HOUSEHOLDS WAS SELECTED. INFORMATION ON THE INCIDENT REPORTING OF SIX CRIME CATEGORIES WAS SOUGHT, INCLUDING PROPERTY STOLEN FROM HOUSEHOLD WITHOUT BREAKING AND ENTERING; CRIMINAL DESTRUCTION OR VANDALISM OF PROPERTY; PROPERTY STOLEN FROM MEMBER OF HOUSEHOLD WHILE NOT AT HOME; BREAKING AND ENTERING; ANYTHING ELSE RESPONDENT CONSIDERED CRIME AGAINST HOUSEHOLD OR ANYONE IN HOUSEHOLD; AND VICTIM OF VIOLENCE, MURDER, ASSAULT, RAPE, OR ARMED ROBBERY. DATA ON HOUSEHOLD AND PERSONAL VICTIMIZATION WERE PROJECTED FROM THE SAMPLE OF 800 HOUSEHOLDS TO THE 3,056,000 HOUSEHOLDS IN MICHIGAN TO PROVIDE STATEWIDE ESTIMATES OF CRIME. OF 2,089 EMPLOYERS SURVEYED, 1,364 OR 66 PERCENT RETURNED REPORTING FORMS. DATA FROM EMPLOYERS WERE PROJECTED TO 142,000 PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT ON THE MICHIGAN EMPLOYMENT SECURITY COMMISSION'S ROSTER. SURVEY RESULTS REFLECT OR DESCRIBE VICTIMIZATION EXPERIENCES, FEAR OF CRIME AND SELF-PROTECTION, CRIME CAUSES AND CURES, CRIMINAL CODES, COURTS AND SENTENCING, PENAL INSTITUTIONS, CASINO GAMBLING, AND CRIME AT PLACES OF WORK. AN APPENDIX NOTES RESIDENTIAL SURVEY AND CRIME INCIDENT REPORTING SUBGROUPS ANALYSIS. EXTENSIVE TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (DEP)
