STUDY TO DEVELOP A METHOD TO CHARACTERIZE THE DEFORMATION OR 'BACKFACE SIGNATURE' TO TISSUES DIRECTLY BENEATH THE POINT OF IMPACT ON FLEXIBLE BODY ARMORS STRUCK BY HIGH SPEED PROJECTILES AND TO RELATE IT TO TISSUE RESPONSE.
Abstract
THROUGH THE USE OF HIGH-SPEED PHOTOGRAPHY OF BACKLIGHTED GELATIN BLOCKS, THE BACKFACE SIGNATURES OF THE .22 CALIBER AND .38 CALIBER MISSILES WERE DEFINED AND RELATED TO TISSUE RESPONSE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE TO INCREASE THIS DATA BASE TO ACHIEVE A PREDICTIVE MODEL RELATING THE PHYSICAL MEASURES OF BACKFACE SIGNATURE TO THE PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS TO REDUCE THE COST OF ARMOR EVALUATION.
