Describes the survey methods used to carry out the Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016. Previously known as the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, this national survey has been conducted periodically since 1974 among state prisoners and since 1991 among federal prisoners. This report discusses the universe of prisons and prisoners, the sample design, the selection of prisons and prisoners, the consent process, the response rates, and the post-survey adjustments and weighting procedures.
