THIS ARTICLE IS A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE PREVAILING PERPLEXITIES IN CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN LATIN AMERICA AND SOME PROPOSALS FOR RECTIFYING THEM.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS IDENTIFY TWO GENERAL CATEGORIES OF PROBLEMS, INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL. AMONG THE INTERNAL DIFFICULTIES LISTED ARE: A LACK OF INTERDISCIPLINARY INTEGRATION; POLARIZATION BETWEEN CLINICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND STUDIES; THE BREACH BETWEEN PURE AND APPLIED RESEARCH; AND THE USE OF A MULTITUDE OF METHODS AND TECHNIQUES. AMONG THE EXTERNAL DIFFICULTIES IDENTIFIED ARE THE AMOUNT OF UNREPORTED CRIME AND THE LACK OF INTERACTION BETWEEN ADMINISTRATORS AND RESEARCHERS. IN FOCUSING ON LATIN AMERICA IN GENERAL AND VENEZUELA IN PARTICULAR, THE ARTICLE WARNS AGAINST IMPORTING CONCEPTS AND METHODS WHICH DO NOT COINCIDE WITH THE POLITICAL, SOCIO-ECONOMIC, AND IDEOLOGICAL COMPOSITION OF THE COUNTRY OR REGION. THE AUTHORS ALSO ARGUE FOR A SERIOUS CONSIDERATION OF THE NOTIONS OF THE NEW CRIMINOLOGY. IN CONCLUSION, A SET OF PRINCIPLES FOR CONDUCTING CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH WHICH TAKE ACCOUNT OF SOCIAL REALITIES IS PRESENTED. --IN SPANISH...MSP
