Rehabilitative treatment, which emerged early this century, peaked in the 1950's, and suffered a loss of faith in the 1960's and 1970's, may be re-emerging in the 1990's.
Abstract
Advocates of rehabilitation may cite findings derived through meta-analysis of data from multiple studies that are not necessarily revealed in analyses of individual studies. The authors argue that the research method is vulnerable to ideological misinterpretation. They conclude that rehabilitation is not unlike other practices in that it can help if the client wants help and is amenable and if such help matches their needs. Therefore, rehabilitation ultimately is the responsibility of offenders themselves, and not a proper function of prisons. 6 tables and 36 references
