Data tables and a narrative summary describe the characteristics of the 796 Oklahoma prison inmates who had scores of 75 or less on the revised Beta intelligence test in September 1985.
Abstract
No single facility had more than 11 percent of the identified inmates. More than 40 percent of the mentally handicapped inmates were assigned to security levels higher than minimum. Most of the 796 inmates were incarcerated for burglary, larceny, or robbery. The mentally handicapped group had more females (11 percent versus 6 percent) and more blacks (54 percent versus 29 percent) than the general prison population. Of 591 cases reviewed by psychologists, 143 were recommended for a program for the mentally impaired, 14 needed mental health care, 3 needed nursing home care, 23 needed substance abuse treatment, 2 were on death row, and 406 were recommended as able to function in the general population. The balance among receptions and releases projected for the following year suggest that this group is a stable subgroup of the inmate population and requires special attention. Data tables.
