This videotape discusses the effects of violence, how to recognize violence in ordinary situations, ways to work toward personal solutions, and alternatives to male violence.
Abstract
Paul Kivel, co-founder of the Oakland Men's Project, discusses how to: recognize violence in daily life, understand the roots of violence, intervene with violent men, work with anger, and practice alternatives to violence. The tape uses role-playing exercises to demonstrate some of the topics under discussion. It also asks viewers to stop the tape and complete exercises featuring cliches about what it means to be a man or woman in today's society, and then return to the tape for reviews of how these concepts relate to violent behavior. The narrative, role-playing, and written exercises discuss the roots of violence and suggest alternatives to violence. The presentation emphasizes ways men can modify their behavior and can reach out to help other men modify their behavior.
