A sample of 45 heterosexual couples, classified into three stages of involvement, completed several questionnaires requesting background and sexual information. The questionnaires also included six scenarios describing various dating situations involving different levels of intimacy.
Abstract
The study hypothesized that the respondent's sex, couple's dating stage, woman's type of "no" response, and level of intimacy would be related to the man's reaction to his date's refusal of sexual advances and future consequences to the couple's dating relationship. The findings showed that most men would comply with their date's refusals to their sexual advances; however, a large percentage of responses involved some type of verbal or physical coercion to continue intimacy after the woman refused. Intimacy level in a dating situation and the couple's involvement level were the best predictors of a man's compliance in a sexual disagreement situation. These results confirm the complexity of modern dating situations and the importance for both men and women to become more aware of their own and their partner's expectations and desires. 1 table, 2 figures, and 29 references
