EXAMINES THE MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE CITY WHICH IT HANDLES, THE RESOURCES OF THE DEPARTMENT, AND VIEWS OF PATROLMEN REGARDING THEIR WORK.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR BEGINS BY CITING SOME STATISTICS THAT INDICATE THE GROWTH OF THE CITY OF MEMPHIS AND THE DEMANDS PLACED ON THE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT. HE ALSO EXAMINES THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE RESOURCES OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT HAVE GROWN. FOUR MAJOR CRITICISMS OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS TODAY ARE CITED ALONG WITH STATEMENTS OF A PATROLMAN ABOUT HIS WORK AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE EFFICIENCY OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. COMMENTS ARE THEN MADE ON AREAS WHERE INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN APLIED, SUCH AS MANAGEMENT, TRAINING, AND PROFESSIONALISM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
