Recent international meetings focusing on the need to enhance traveler security have concluded that the dissemination of timely and reliable information is the cornerstone of any proposed effort to reduce and prevent risks to travelers.
Abstract
People venturing into areas with which they have limited familiarity need information about the specifics of potential local security hazards. Travelers who have the facts can take reasonable precautions to avoid problems. Travelers need to keep basic crime prevention techniques in mind, as well as to be aware of the specific issues related to their destination. A National Traveler Safety Team has been formed in the United States to determine national standards for traveler safety. They recognize that the media has a central role in contributing to public awareness, although they emphasize the need for accurate, balanced, and responsible media coverage. Frontline tourism personnel also need training regarding their responsibility to answer questions about safety. Other measures include improved police efforts, multilingual emergency toll-free telephone numbers, and the development of a community safety plan in each community.
