This user's guide to the machine-readable data file for a study of offender-treatment matching in North Carolina between 1980-82 describes the file, summarizes the study, and provides additional research information.
Abstract
The study evaluated the implications of rational-choice theory for offender rehabilitation. It was hypothesized that income-enhancing inmate rehabiliation programs would be most effective for the economically motivated offender. Data collected related to offender demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, criminal history, prison work activities, type of release, and recidivism. In addition to describing the file, this guide provides variable labels and descriptions for the 11 cards in the data set. Appendixes list variable labels, subject numbers, and means. Additional descriptive statistics are provided, including the standard deviation, minimum and maximum values, standard error, minimum and maximum values, standard error, and sum for each of the study variables.
