THIS MANUAL OUTLINES THE TYPES OF DATA COLLECTED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING UNIT, THE REPORTING PROCEDURES USED, AND THE CALCULATION METHODS USED FOR CERTAIN STATISTICAL ANALYSES.
Abstract
THE CRIME REPORTING UNIT OF MASSACHUSETTS, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT IN 1974, SERVES A DUAL FUNCTION: IT IS THE CENTRAL REPOSITORY FOR THE COLLECTION OF CRIME STATISTICS AND THE ANALYSIS OF DATA. THE OBJECTIVES OF UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING ARE OUTLINED, AND THE PURPOSE AND USES OF THE CRIME INDEX, CRIME RATES DATA, AND VIOLENT CRIME STATISTICS ARE REVIEWED. THE REPORTING PROCEDURE IS OUTLINED AND THE TYPES OF INFORMATION NECESSARY FOR UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING ARE EXPLAINED. FINALLY, THE VERIFICATION PROCEDURES AND METHODS OF CALCULATING RATES, PERCENTAGES, AND TRENDS ARE DESCRIBED.
