The study reports the results of an evaluation of the Dutch National Drug Campaign booklet "What Everybody Ought to Know About Drug." The study measured behavior modifications as a result of reading the booklet and discussing the subject with adolescents.
Abstract
The national campaign was directed toward both parents and educators who wished to discuss drugs with adolescent children. The first contact potential applicants of the booklet had with the campaign came through the printed mass media such as newspapers and magazines. It was therefore, directed at a highly educated pool of the population. The people then had to request the booklet be sent to them. The results of the study showed that the campaign reached people besides the target group of parents and educators; that the respondents were indeed highly educated and used newspapers as a source of information; and that many respondents were involved in the subject of drugs either by contacts with drug users, by own use of drugs, or by previous information about the subject. Although the booklet's information was considered too general to have a high impact, there were positive changes in attitudes and behavior as indicated in two of the tables. 1 figure, 3 tables, and 9 references (Author abstract modified)
