Maryland's Statewide Uniform Crime Reporting Program has on record 509 carjackings reported in 1998, a 19- percent decrease from the 626 reported in 1997.
Abstract
In addition, 62 motor vehicle robberies were reported that did not meet the definition of carjacking; these robberies included 17 unfounded carjackings. The reported carjackings involved 546 victims; 1 was murdered and 17 received serious injuries. The carjackings involved 796 offenders. Use of the handgun accounted for 260 or 51.1 percent of the carjackings. A total of 73.1 percent of the victims were male, 26.9 percent were female, and 0.1 percent were unknown. A total of 61.9 percent of the victims were black, 36.8 percent were white, and 1.3 percent were of other races. Victims' ages ranged from 4 to 89 years; 59.2 percent were ages 19-40 years.
