Abstract

THE BOOK CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF SHORT, NARRATIVE SECTIONS SUMMARIZING LAWS, DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES, AND ACCEPTED PROCEDURES GOVERNING MARYLAND TRAFFIC POLICE OFFICERS. FOLLOWING EACH SECTION THERE IS A SHORT TEST. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE JURISDICTION BOUNDARIES; LAWS REGARDING PURSUIT ACROSS COUNTY OR MUNICIPAL BOUNDARIES AND ACROSS STATE BOUNDARIES; GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR PURSUIT; PREPARATION FOR TRAFFIC PATROL; PATROL PROCEDURES; TRAFFIC ROAD CHECK PROCEDURES; AND GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF OBSERVATION FOR DETECTING VIOLATIONS. THE SECTION ON DETECTING VIOLATIONS EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ALERT TO THE LESS OBVIOUS TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS AND SUSPICIOUS DRIVING BEHAVIORS. TECHNIQUES FOR CLOCKING SUSPECTED SPEEDING VIOLATORS ARE GIVEN. PRECAUTIONS WHICH SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN ENFORCING TRAFFIC LAWS ARE LISTED. AN APPENDIX CONTAINS THE ANSWERS TO THE SELF-TESTS.
