This manual describes the components and personnel selection and duties for the field training and evaluation program (FTEP) of the Maryland State Police, which is designed to guide and assess probationary troopers' work performance.
Abstract
The first week of the 8-week program covers orientation, and subsequent weeks expose the trooper probationer to tasks that must be performed by a competent State trooper. During the training, the probationer and the field training trooper (FTT) are considered a one-trooper unit until the probationer has reached a performance level sufficient to be considered a one-trooper unit. After instructing FTT's in presenting the training program orientation, the manual describes how FTT's are selected and outlines their duties and responsibilities. Also described are the responsibilities of the field training supervisor, who ensures that FTT's are properly performing their duties. A discussion of probationer evaluations includes procedures for the daily observation report, which focuses on probationers' appearance, attitude, knowledge, performance, relationships, strengths and weaknesses, and remedial training. The field training supervisor completes a weekly evaluation form that rates each of the probationer behaviors assessed by the FTT in the daily evaluations. The standardized evaluation guidelines define rating levels for each of 29 tasks. A training guide is included to instruct probationers in the duties most likely to be performed by a trooper. Program forms are provided.
