Abstract
Statistical data is presented for the Maryland Court of Appeals; the Court of Special Appeals; the Circuit Courts; the District Court; and other Court-Related Agencies, such as the Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland, the Board of Law Examiners, the Maryland State Law Library, the Commission on Judicial Disabilities, the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Officer, and the Rules Committee. After providing an overview of the Maryland Court of Appeals, data on the recent caseload of this Court is offered. During the 2001 term, there were 977 total filings with the Court, including 134 regular docket appeals, 716 petitions for certiorari, 54 miscellaneous appeals, and 73 attorney grievance proceedings. The Court of Special Appeals had 1,926 filings during the 2001 term, representing a 1.3 percent decrease over the past 5 years. Data from the Circuit Courts indicate that during the period from fiscal year 1998 to fiscal year 2002, there was an increase in filing activity from 277,204 filings in 1998 to 289,920 filings in 2002. The District Court of Maryland was busy with a total of 2,179,114 filings for fiscal year 2002. Motor vehicle filings comprised 53 percent of these filings, with a total of 1,154,719 motor vehicle filings. Similar statistics are offered for the Court-Related Agencies.
