TO DETERMINE THE TYPES OF CRIME PREVALENT IN THE MARTIN LUTHER KING BOULEVARD IN MIAMI, A CRIME PROFILE WAS DEVELOPED IN 1976 FOR THE JURISDICTIONS OF THE CITY OF MIAMI AND THE PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
FOR THE 12 OFFENSES ON WHICH DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM THE MIAMI JURISDICTION, A TOTAL OF 429 INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED DURING THE PERIOD OF JANUARY 1 TO DECEMBER 31, 1976. OF THESE, 55 WERE CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS (MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, SIMPLE ASSAULT), 185 WERE DIRECTED AGAINST PROPERTY (BREAKING AND ENTERING; MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT; LARCENY; VANDALISM; BUYING, RECEIVING, OR CONCEALING STOLEN PROPERTY), AND 189 WERE VICTIMLESS CRIMES (PROSTITUTION AND DRUG OFFENSES). A TOTAL OF 45.7 PERCENT OF THE REPORTED OFFENSES OCCURRED ON THE BOULEVARD ITSELF, WHILE 70.1 PERCENT OCCURRED ON OR WITHIN ONE BLOCK OF THE BOULEVARD. IN ADDITION, A TOTAL OF 2,375 INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED IN THE EIGHT OFFENSE CATEGORIES ON WHICH DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM THE PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT JURISDICTION. A TOTAL OF 320 OFFENSES WERE CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS, 406 WERE DIRECTED AGAINST PROPERTY, AND 1,649 WERE CLASSIFIED AS 'GENERAL INVESTIGATIONS' (PROSTITUTION, DRUG OFFENSES, AND OTHER CRIMES). THE ANALYSIS DEMONSTRATES THE UNATTRACTIVENESS OF THIS AREA TO CUSTOMERS OF EXISTING AND POTENTIAL BUSINESSESS. THE NUMBER OF CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SERIOUS CRIMES, AND THE MUMBER OF ROBBERIES AND ASSAULTS ARE ESPECIALLY DETRIMENTAL TO POTENTIAL REVITALIZATION OF THE AREA. MAPS DEPICT THE LOCATION OF CRIMES SURVEYED. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS THAT THE COMMUNITY SHOULD CONSIDER TO REVITALIZE THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARE MENTIONED, SUCH AS THE USE OF HIGH INTENSITY SODIUM VAPOR LIGHTING OR OTHER ILLUMINATION AROUND THE BOULEVARD. TABULAR AND STATISTICAL INFORMATION ARE PROVIDED.
