STUDY TO DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF PUBLIC CONCERN WITH CRIME AGAINST PEOPLE, CONSUMER REACTIONS TO THE SYSTEM, CITIZEN GROUPS MOST LIKELY TO USE THE SYSTEM, AS WELL AS LIKELY ACCEPTANCE OF THE SYSTEM AT DIFFERENT PRICE LEVELS.
Abstract
A CITIZEN'S ALARM SYSTEM, PERSONAL ALARM ACTUATOR, IN THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF A WRISTWATCH OR PENDANT, CAN BE USED TO SUMMON AID IN THE EVENT OF A CRIMINAL ACT, OR OTHER EMERGENCY, WITHIN A GEOGRAPHIC AREA HAVING THE REQUIRED RECEIVER NETWORK. ACTUATION IDENTIFIES THE USER AND HIS LOCATION FOR RESPONSE AGENT ACTION (POLICE, SECURITY GUARDS). THE STUDY WAS BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH 472 HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS AND 135 SMALL BUSINESSES IN NINE HIGH CRIME CITIES. THE STUDY FOUND THAT THE SYSTEM HAS ONLY LIMITED APPEAL TO HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS AND SOMEWHAT GREATER APPEAL TO OWNERS AND MANAGERS OF SMALL BUSINESSES. FOR FINDINGS FROM STUDIES CONCERNED WITH A LOW COST BURGLARY ALARM SYSTEM, SEE NCJ-32104. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
