This report highlights the activities and accomplishment of the Adult Probation Department of the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona during 1979.
Abstract
It briefly discusses the county's probation system and then describes the services offered by the department in the areas of investigation and special services, field services, and administration services. It covers presentence investigations, staff development, volunteer and employment services, probation terminations, the probation population, and special probation programs. The data indicate that presentence reports increased from 3,634 in 1978 to 3,976 in 1979. The total number of individuals supervised increased from 7,133 to 7,733, and the number of probation grants increased from 2,604 to 2,994. Caseload sizes have been kept somewhat under control by increased requests for early terminations. The number of early terminations rose from 982 in 1978 to 1,301 for 1979. This increase in early terminations also indicates that the department is dealing with more hardcore cases, thus increasing the workload. One of the major achievements for 1979 was the institutionalization of work furlough. Statistical tables are appended, and an organizational chart and a few photographs are included.
