This article describes the security system for the Dell Computer Corporation, which has experienced explosive growth that has challenged the security department.
Abstract
Dell's rapid acquisition of buildings requires that the security department conduct a security survey, install all security equipment, and deploy security personnel in 30 days. In this fluid environment, the security department must respond to customer needs solve difficult problems, and handle any situation. To respond to these challenges, Dell uses the latest electronic technology and staffs the security force with a strategic blend of proprietary and contract officers. Besides asset protection and internal investigations, the security department is responsible for many other security-related matters, such as proprietary information, executive protection, and employee security awareness. The security program's focal point is a sophisticated central control center located in a facility at the center of the industrial park. This center monitors camera, card access, and alarm functions in an integrated package. The control center monitors 1.5 million square feet of facilities and 5,000 employees. Due to careful planning, the security system had the capacity to begin small and expand in many directions without retrofitting or reconfiguring the system. The company achieved this by spending sufficient money at first to have a system with the potential for expansion.
