THE AUTHORS EXAMINE THE HISTORY AND WEAKNESSES OF PAST EFFORTS AT ALTERING THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM AND OUTLINE THE ESSENTIAL EFFORTS COMPRISING AN EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND ASSESS CURRENT PRACTICE.
Abstract
THEY CONCLUDE THAT, REALISTICALLY, THE EXTENT AND QUALITY OF REFORM WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE ABILITY OF CORRECTIONAL SYSTEMS TO GENERATE GREATER MANAGERIAL SOPHISTICATION AND COMPETENCE FROM WITHIN. IN ACHIEVING THIS IMPROVEMENT, THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE ROLE FOR TRAINING. INCLUDED IN THE DISCUSSION OF TRAINING FOR MANAGEMENT UP-GRADING IS A PRESENTATION OF THE MAJOR MODES OF TRAINING CURRENTLY IN VOGUE IN THE CORRECTIONS FIELD, THEIR WEAKNESSES, AND A PRESCRIPTION FOR AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY TO ACHIEVE VIABLE TRAINING GOALS.
