Abstract
THE AUTHOR FIRST EXAMINES THE PROBLEM AREAS WHICH PROBATION OFFICES MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED AS A RESULT OF PROBATION SYSTEM GROWTH. SEVERAL MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES ARE THEN EXAMINED THROUGH AN ACCOUNT OF THE ACTIONS TAKEN BY THE U.S. PROBATION OFFICE IN THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA IN ITS EFFORTS TO CREATE A NEW ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. THE STRATEGIES USED IN THIS PROBATION OFFICE ARE DESCRIBED FOR THE FOLLOWING REORGANIZATION STEPS: PLANNING, DEFINITION OF ORGANIZATIONAL AND INDIVIDUAL OBJECTIVES, DEVELOPMENT OF MEASURES OF SUCCESS, DEVELOPMENT OF A CASE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM, PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, USE OF VOLUNTEERS, AND SYSTEMS AND RESEARCH APPROACHES.
