This study examined battering and abusive behaviors in a sample of homeless, addicted male veterans.
Abstract
The salience and incidence of battering behaviors between male veterans and their partners is unknown. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides domestic violence treatment via the Domestic Relations Clinic in the form of individual and psychoeducational group counseling. Nationally, VA medical centers provide limited treatment for male batterers. No VA research studies exist that have evaluated batterer intervention and treatment in male veterans. In this study, 76 veterans were screened using the Domestic Violence/Abuse Screen self-report for pretest and posttest comparisons. The treatment approach used was a 13-week psychoeducation group and a hybrid of the Paul Kivel and the EMERGE models to meet the challenging and unique needs of the veteran population.
