Self-report data gathered in 1987 from 395 male and 268 female students in grades 7-10 and the first year of college in a coastal city in the southern Philippines were used to compare delinquency rates among males and females in that country.
Abstract
Results revealed higher rates of delinquency among males. Regression analyses using several independent variables revealed that peer relations and attitudinal constructs are significantly associated with delinquency, particularly among males. The sons of higher-status fathers were more delinquent than were juveniles from lower-status backgrounds. Among females, the collective influence of the independent variables was negligible. Further analyses suggested that different explanations may exist for male and female patterns of juvenile delinquency.
