ASPECTS OF VICTIMOLOGY WHICH NEED SYSTEMATIC STUDY AND RESEARCH ARE DESCRIBED; EXISTING RESOURCES FOR EACH ARE DETAILED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE WORK ARE GIVEN.
Abstract
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION REVIEWS THE MAJOR PUBLICATIONS AND STUDIES ON VICTIMOLOGY FROM THE 1940'S TO THE TIME OF WRITING. THE SIX BASIC DIMENSIONS OF THE PROBLEM ARE THEN OUTLINED: (1) THE PERSON AS VICTIM; (2) THE RELATIONSHIP OF VICTIM TO OFFENDER; (3) BUSINESS AS VICTIM; (4) PROPERTY AS VICTIM; (5) COLLECTIVE VIOLENCE; AND (6) COMPENSATION AND RESTITUTION TO VICTIMS. STUDIES ON THESE TOPICS SINCE 1965 ARE SUMMARIZED; UNIFORM CRIME REPORT DATA ARE CITED AS AN INDICATION OF CRIME RATES AND TRENDS. THE FIRST FOUR DIMENSIONS OF VICTIMOLOGY REQUIRE STUDIES AND REPORTS PRIMARILY BY AGENCIES OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. THE FIFTH DIMENSION, THAT OF COLLECTIVE VIOLENCE, REQUIRES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LARGE-SCALE TEMPORARY COMMISSIONS, WHILE THE FINAL DIMENSION OF COMPENSATION AND RESTITUTION CAN BE STUDIED BY GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES OR INTERESTED PERSONS. SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF ALL SIX DIMENSIONS CAN BE INVESTIGATED BY TECHNICIANS AT THE UNUVERSITY OR ADMINISTRATIVE LEVEL. NOTES ARE PROVIDED. (DAS)
