IN CONJUNCTION WITH A PROGRAM OF CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT IN THE FORMULATION OF MAINE'S CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS, BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON STATE AND COUNTY POLICE AND COURTS IS PROVIDED FOR CITIZEN STUDY GROUPS.
Abstract
THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS PROGRAM (COMMUNITY ALLIANCE) OF THE MAINE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING AND ASSISTANCE AGENCY INCLUDES THE FORMATION OF CITIZEN STUDY GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE STATE FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING INPUT AND EXPRESSING OPINIONS ABOUT THE RECOMMENDED STANDARDS AND GOALS DRAWN UP AT A STATE CONFERENCE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL. THIS PUBLICATION, WHICH INCLUDES BOTH STATE AND COUNTY AND GENERAL AND SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE PARTICIPANTS ON CITIZEN STUDY COMMITTEES WITH BASIC INFORMATION ON THE ORGANIZATION, MANPOWER, AND OPERATING COSTS OF POLICE AND COURTS AT BOTH THE COUNTY AND STATE LEVELS. SUPPLEMENTING NARRATIVE DISCUSSIONS OF POLICE AND COURT ACTIVITIES ARE THE FOLLOWING TABULAR AND GRAPHIC DATA: STATE POLICE TROOP LOCATIONS; COUNTY SHERIFF LOCATIONS; ORGANIZED MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS; STATISTICAL PROFILE OF THE STATE ON A COUNTY-BY-COUNTY BASIS; POLICE MANPOWER ANALYSIS BY COUNTY; 1975 POLICE EXPENDITURES BY COUNTY; SUPERIOR COURT LOCATIONS; JUDICIAL DISTRICTS; AND STATISTICS ON COURT MANPOWER AND OPERATING COSTS. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO STATISTICAL PROFILES, POLICE MANPOWER, AND POLICE-OPERATING COSTS FOR KENNEBEC AND SOMERSET COUNTIES. THE MAINE COURT SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH THE WORK OF THE SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT, THE SUPERIOR COURT, AND THE DISTRICT COURT. (RCB)
