A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF JUDICIAL STRUCTURE AND PROCEDURE IN ENGLAND AND WALES THAT HAS BEEN REVISED TO INCLUDE THE LATEST ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS.
Abstract
AN HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION PRECEDES SECTIONS DEALING WITH CIVIL AND CRIMINAL COURT JURISDICTIONS. THE SUBJECTS COVERED INCLUDE PROSECUTION AND DEFENSE PROCEDURES IN THE HIGH COURT AND ASSIZES, APPELLATE COURTS, AND JUVENILE COURTS. JUDICIAL PERSONNEL INCLUDING SOLICITORS, BARRISTERS, JUDGES, JURIES AND COURT OFFICIALS ARE DESCRIBED AND THEIR DUTIES ARE DEFINED. FINANCES OF THE COURTS AND LEGAL AID ARE DISCUSSED IN A SEPARATE SECTION. THE REVISED MATERIAL TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE NEW, MORE RATIONAL LAYOUT OF THE HIGHER COURTS, THE SHIFT OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR CHILDREN FROM JUVENILE COURTS TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES, THE GREAT INCREASE IN THE JURISDICTION OF INDUSTRIAL TRIBUNALS, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW INDUSTRIAL COURT. THE FINAL SECTION REVIEWS THE OUTLOOK FOR JUDICIAL REFORM.
